First-Time DUI Penalties in RI
The punishment for a first offense DUI includes up to a maximum jail sentence of one year, a fine, a suspended license, community service, and alcohol counseling and assessments. While getting sentenced to jail for a first offense is considered rare; the penalties may increase depending on the level of the driver’s intoxication.
The following are the penalties for a first-time DUI based on BAC test readings:
- Readings of .08 to .10 – You will be fined $100 to $300 and lose your license for a period of 1 to 6 months. You may be obligated to perform 10 to 60 hours of community service and enroll in a DUI/alcohol program and treatment counseling.
- Readings of .10 to .15 or Unknown BAC – You will be fined $100 to $400 and lose your license for a period of 3 months to 1 year. You may be obligated to perform 10 to 60 hours of community service, along with DUI school and treatment.
- Readings of .15 or above or DUI-Drugs – You will be fined $500 and lose your license for 3 to 18 months. Community service of 20 to 60 hours, as well as DUI school and alcohol counseling.
