What Type of Crime is Robbery?
According to Rhode Island law, robbery is a theft crime that involves the use or threat of force or violence with intention of stealing another person or party’s property. Due to the violent nature of robbery, state prosecutors will approach these types of cases with considerable aggression.
1st Degree Robbery Sentence in RI
According to Rhode Island Code § 11-39-1, first-degree robbery is committed using a deadly weapon, robbery where the victim is injured, &/or robbery where the victim is someone who is significantly impaired or an elder. This can be punishable by up to life in prison and/or a fine of up to $15k.
2nd Degree Robbery Sentence in RI
Second-degree robbery is committed by force or threat without any weapons, when no one is injured, or when the victim is neither significantly impaired or an elder. Second-degree robbery is punishable by up to 30 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $10k.
