New RI bill to Restrict BHO Extraction

|

Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Kilmartin has made known his opposition to the extraction of highly-potent butane hash oil from marijuana by medical marijuana patients and caregivers.

The legislation to keep patients from the volatile oil is being sponsored by Democratic state Senator Frank Ciccone III of Providence and is in line with similar prohibitions against producing homemade butane oil in states such as Colorado, Oregon, and Washington, according to Kilmartin.

Manufacturing and extracting butane hash oil, or BHO, is a hazardous process given the flammable nature of butane which has been responsible for explosions in numerous attempts to extract the oil in a home laboratory.

The bill seeks to regulate the extraction of the oil and to do so in accordance with the Rhode Island Department of Health, to be performed only through compassion centers.
